Firsts

There is always talk in the adoption world about the age of kids at adoption.  Perception usually that it's easier with babies.

Luk and Kai have been much easier in so many ways. They have both clearly made choice to belong. To get along. They meet us half way with attachment.  The girls were babies and they fought for independence and the cuddles were no where near as frequent.  These beginning days with Kai are considerably easier than we were expecting.

The other concern I hear is about missing firsts.  Yet, I'm not fussing about firsts we missed, we are way too busy experiencing first with the kids on a daily basis.

Tonight Kai had an ice cream cone with Luk and Jia.  Clearly his first.  The look on his face when he learned he could eat the cone. Priceless.  Yesterday he played with play doh.  Had a bath were he laughed like crazy over dumping water out of a boat. He was encouraged to try getting his own pants on.  He wore spiderman underwear and sat on a western toilet off and on all morning.  He went to the theater with the family to see Lili. Today he was babysat by the grandparents.  Built a castle with Dad in the afternoon.  Had a tea party with Luk and Jia and played games with Gramma, Luk and Jia.  All firsts.

Celebrating Lili.

Miss Lili is 14 today. Wow. We're so proud of the young lady she is becoming.

Last night she played piano in the big theater on a Steinway Grand in the Music Festival Gala Show.  She was so beautiful and played with such grace.  I cried through the whole thing.  Afterwards friends came over and we devoured the ice cream cake we had for Lili. Kai brag moment, he sat on the edge of his seat, hands clasped in his lap, sat still, no noises and clapped in the right spots.  He was beyond amazing.  We took two cars because we honestly had NO clue how it would go.

Today I got up and made cinnamon sticky buns for her wee celebration tonight.

Her choice was to eat at the Malahat Chalet without the littles.  We made this plan long before Kai.  I've been nervous all day to leave him with Gramma.  When we left he was cuddled on the couch between Gramma and Grampa happily waving good bye to us.

Dinner was awesome. The view is amazing and the service is stellar.  So nice to sit and visit in peace.  We're on our way back now to have 'the party' with the littles.

School Movie Night

Just Jia and I.  I thought we'd cuddle together on our blankie and eat popcorn.  Hmm.  She ditched me in two seconds flat.  :)  I'm sitting in the horrible metal chairs, contemplating moving to a mat all by myself with my beach chair.

Oddities

It's hard to describe oddities to people.  We're living it so we get used to it overall.  Luk still has odd behavior. We can't get through a meal without correcting things with him.  Fork out of your ear, not in your nose either. Ew, don't rub food in your hair.  Use your spoon, use your spoon, use your spoon.  Use your napkin. You can't use fingers for soup.  Seriously, weird noises and gross messes are just the norm.  Kai has a whole other set of quirkiness. He gorges to start and dives into his food.  We have to work on slowing him down. He can eat a banana in three bites. Plus he needs help figuring out the spoon still.

With Kai it's clear he's used to wandering around, helping with chores and keeping busy with very little.

For the family photo I laid out two blue stripped hair o's for Jia to have pig tails.  They went missing.  We all know Kai took them because who else would.  He couldn't produce them so I just did her hair differently. Yesterday when I got home the two hair o's were in my bathroom upstairs.

Kai got out of bed at 5am yesterday.  Lili tried to get him back to bed but he refused so she came to get us.  We said to leave him because he'll just wander and then come and find me. Except he didn't this time.  Eric had to go get him, he was in the main bathroom throwing the toilet seat lid down repeatedly.  With such velocity it was amazing it didn't break.

There is usually extra rolls of toilet paper on the backs of the toilets.  We were out upstairs.  Then the last roll in use went missing.  I found it on the fireplace mantle.  Kai strikes again :)

If we lay our glasses down, Kai moves them.

Kai was in a snit because Jia didn't want him in the bathroom with her, he had to be removed and then he proceeded to roll a Chinese scroll painting that is hanging on the wall.  He wouldn't be redirected from that until I came to sit with him.  He hasn't looked at the painting again.

When he is stressed or confused he runs to either the garbage can or laundry hamper and starts slamming the lids up and down.

He is all about tearing down towers so he is extremely annoying to Luk in the duplo department.

This morning every time I looked away he headed into the bathroom to play with the tub taps.  Which is a change from jiggling the door knobs.  Most of these things seem to be an attempt to annoy us and get attention.  He does these things for the most part when we're trying to get ready to leave.

Nothing serious.  No head banging. No self mutilating.  No destruction of property. Not making messes.  No gross habits.  Just odd quirky moments.  Over and over again.  We're starting to be quite mindful of hiding things from Kai and putting some stuff up high.  He's an opportunist for sure.

Coloring

Eric and I sat after dinner last night to color. Therapy coloring. We don't get much relaxation time.  Lili and Fei did dishes and the three littles took off playing. Slowly the littles ended up joining us.  Quietly and calmly.  It was weird and nice. Kai was first. He got his book and crayons and sat beside me. He did manage some marks and squiggles but for the most part he was all about putting his crayons in and out of the box and retrieving them from the floor.  Then Jia. Then Luk.  So cute.  Eric finally finished the Monkey he was trying to do before CNY and the addition of Kai ;)

1/2 Day of School

Kids had a half day and it was my flex so we went for a walk at Bright Angel. Still a bit chilly out and there were way too many kids on the playground to let Luk into the fray.  He also hated the swinging bridge and was super upset when Kai ran ahead with Jia.  He was holding on tight. He's even more worried than usual about falling.  The rest of us had a nice walk though.

7:00 Bedtime for the boys.

Is it ok to admit that my favorite part of the day is that blissfull moment when the boys are in bed?
