Day 2 - Lava Caves

Looks like the most unforgiving land ever.
The Devil's Playground.
The welcoming center.
$25 for a park pass.  They lend out flashlights and have great maps with lots of information.  You drive a loop stopping at each of the 20 caves. Some were closed for the bats.  Which was fine with us. We weren't the only ones there.
Cave one.  Easiest one there and lit.  Was still too dark for Kai and I.
For $34 a night the rooms are pretty great.  On the 15th floor so the girls are loving the view.  Their room has city views.  Ours has mountain views.
Rooms are clean and spacious. They smell good. The casino however not great.  Smokey. Kids were wide eyed walking through. They've seen the tiny casinos on the cruise ships but nothing as big as this. The lady checking us in just moved to Reno. She's followed her daughter/grandson who is engaged to the Casino owner.  My gift...getting peoples stories everywhere we go.
The park is stunningly beautiful. It's cold but no one was complaining. Not raining so it was all good. The caves are the same temp year round.
Kai had a super hard time climbing down.  Lots of fussing.  Eric had to guide his feet each step. Five of us down below encouraging him to keep going.  He did think the caves were awesome however after three of them he was done.  We stayed warm in the car while the others explored some more.
It was fun to watch Eric sharing his interests with the kids.  They were all a bit surprised at his cave knowledge.  Haha.  The documentary king.
Coolest shot ever.
We ate dinner at Mel's dinner at the hotel and the kids thanked us for taking them spelunking.  Sometimes the adventures work out ok ;)
